Hevo Data is a data integration platform that helps businesses integrate and automate data flow across various sources. It enables businesses to move data from various sources to a data warehouse or any other destination in real-time. Hevo Data is designed to make data integration fast and effortless for businesses of all sizes. The company is headquartered in Bangalore, India, and was founded in 2017 by Manish Jethani and Sourabh Agarwal.
During my four-month-long internship at Hevo Data, which took place from November 2021 to February 2022, I had the privilege of working under the guidance of Akhil Krishnan. My primary responsibility was collaborating with the product managers to brainstorm innovative ideas and implement new features for the users. I actively participated in the complete product design cycle, from initial research to final delivery. To gather valuable insights and perform analytics, I utilized Fullstory and conducted exploratory interviews. Figma was my go-to tool when designing interfaces, enabling me to create visually appealing and user-friendly designs. To ensure the usability and effectiveness of my prototypes, I employed the Useberry Plugin within Figma for preliminary testing. This comprehensive approach allowed me to contribute significantly to developing and enhancing Hevo Data's products during my internship.
Customer Satisfaction (CSAT Tool)
In order to address the low success rate in creating data pipelines and gain a deeper understanding of the underlying issues, Hevo Data decided to develop a Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) tool. This tool aimed to measure and evaluate customer satisfaction levels with the company's products and services, specifically focusing on the data pipeline creation flow. Despite providing side-by-side tutorials and documentation, users were still encountering difficulties in successfully creating pipelines. The process itself involved several technical steps on the user's end, making it challenging to pinpoint the exact reasons for failure.
To gather more actionable insights, I outlined the critical steps within the flow where the highest failure rates were observed. Based on this analysis, I designed relevant questions and prompts that would be presented to users whenever they encountered difficulties or moved out of the flow. The CSAT tool was also designed to capture customer sentiments throughout the entire process, allowing us to gauge their satisfaction levels at different stages.
By implementing this CSAT tool, Hevo Data aimed to collect valuable data and feedback from users, enabling the team to identify pain points, address usability issues, and improve the data pipeline creation experience. The tool would provide valuable insights into the specific challenges faced by customers, ultimately leading to enhanced product usability and higher customer satisfaction.
Activate
The dashboard I designed for Hevo Activate, with a focus on handling failures during the three stages of ingestion, transformation, and load, was met with great appreciation and adoption from users. Given the complexity of data pipelines and the potential for data loss, it was crucial to create a user-friendly interface that provided clear visibility into any failures and actionable steps to address them effectively.
The dashboard allowed users to easily identify and view all failures that occurred during the pipeline stages. By highlighting these failures, users could quickly pinpoint where the issues were and take necessary steps to resolve them. The design ensured that the dashboard presented key actionable information, empowering users to solve problems directly from the dashboard with minimal effort.
The emphasis on addressing failures within the Activate pipeline proved to be immensely valuable for users. It helped them proactively handle data issues, mitigate potential loss, and ensure the smooth flow of data between their data warehouse and CRM application. The positive response and appreciation received from users validated the effectiveness of the dashboard design and its impact on enhancing user experience and data reliability within Hevo Activate.

My experience at Hevo Data was incredibly valuable and transformative for my growth as a designer. One aspect that I truly appreciated was the level of product ownership I was given, which allowed me to explore and experiment with my own design process. This autonomy empowered me to carve out unique solutions and implement my ideas.
While I had the freedom to take ownership of my work, I also received constant guidance and support from senior members of the team. Their expertise and mentorship provided valuable insights and helped me refine my design approach. Collaborating with experienced professionals allowed me to understand the importance of data-driven decision-making in the design process. I learned how to leverage data and metrics to inform my design choices, ensuring that my solutions were not only visually appealing but also aligned with the needs of the users and the overall product goals.
Working in such an environment allowed me to develop a well-rounded skill set as a designer. I gained confidence in my abilities to tackle complex design challenges, make informed decisions based on data, and deliver solutions that catered to both user needs and business objectives.
Overall, the combination of product ownership, experimentation, and guidance at Hevo Data provided me with a valuable learning experience and shaped me into a more strategic and data-driven designer.
